King Solomon's Mines, by H. Rider Haggard
One of the defining authors of adventure literature, H. Rider Haggard wrote some of the most captivating and enduring adventure stories of all time. In the likes of King Solomon's Mines, readers followed Allen Quartermain, safari leader extraordinaire, into the unknown continent of Africa while the rest of the world was quickly becoming less and less mystifying. Searching for ancient treasures, lost civilizations, and the unkown, Quartermain advances into the "dark" continent dozens of times in stories penned between 1885 and 1920. One of the most interesting aspects of these stories is the honest, noble, and occasionally heroic way Haggard portrays native tribes and individuals. Give these books a try and escape back to a different time, full of adventure and opportunity.
Leaves of Grass, by Walt Whitman
The Father of American Poetry, Walt Whitman, completes the cycle begun by Samuel Coolridge and William Wordsworth in romantic times. Trying to create a new type of petry using "common" language, Coolridge and Wordsworth paved the way for America's greatest revolutionary poet.
"I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I / love, / If you want me again look for me under your bootsoles." -Walt Whitman, Song of Myself, Leaves of Grass
The Picture of Dorian Gray
From Wikipedia.org: The Picture of Dorian Gray is considered one of the last works of classic gothic horror fiction with a strong Faustian theme.3 It deals with the artistic movement of the decadents, and homosexuality, both of which caused some controversy when the book was first published. However, in modern times, the book has been referred to as "one of the modern classics of Western literature."4
